Song for today - Broken Bells - The Ghost Inside

Broken Bells is James Mercer of the Shins and Danger Mouse. Together they created something really cool, and a new video just came out for one of their songs. The reason I like this video is because of the sci-fi theme and Christina Hendricks from Mad Men and Firefly. If you don’t watch either of those shows, don’t worry about. Basically the video has a cyborg going on a dream voyage to get to this really special place. Unfortunately she doesn’t have the means to get there and literally end up tearing her self apart to get her dream. It’s a little sad, slightly hopeful, and leaves you wanted to know more about the story. I think this could be just the start to a group of music videos that tell a larger story. Sorry I annoyed you with all these words. The lack of posts is due to finals and other priorities. Over the summer I’m sure we’ll write more. Anyways, here’s the video

STOP EVERYTHING!

you guys, you guys, you guys the new Menomena single just dropped. For serious though I haven’t been this excited since I learned you could buy 5 pound bags of Mike and Ikes. Seriously I’m so excited. I found it on the Willamette Weeklies Local cut, and since I’m technologically retarded the best thing I can do is just link you to the website.

It’s really really good too by the way.

Music Vid of the day- M.I.A- Born Free

If you haven’t at least heard of M.I.A., where have you been? Her latest video is directed by Romain Gervas, who also directed Stress for Justice, and I Believe for Simian Mobile Disco. All over the interwebs, people are saying that the video is a comment on current American situations, and has political undertones. I urge you not to look at it that way and if you really want to worry about that stuff, go tell it to your blog. The video is pretty violent and has a bit of nudity, and harsh language in the beginning, so probably NSFW. The song is awesome, its like a mix of heavy metal, hip-hop, and dance. I think it’s pretty cool and the look and direction of the video is also really well done. His concept and execution is really good and tells a story, that might not be directly related to the lyrics of the video, but fits with the sound. So here it is.

SOTD - Wahlstrom & Valiant : Keep Up

This song I just can’t stop playing I like it that much. There are many electro songs that get repetitive and boring after time, but this one has me still bobbing my head after 10 listens. I’m not really gonna say much about the song, it works by itself, if you want more info about the artists, go here http://wahlstromvaliant.blogspot.com/ .

or watch the video, but I warn you, it is kinda weird/creepy.

And…yeah. That’s all I got to say. Soooooooooo….bai!

SOTD- Erykah Badu -Jump up in the Air(Stay there)

Erykah Badu is amazing. You might not guess that I would be a fan based on what I have posted earlier, but it’s true. Jerbles likes to call her Badubedubedu. And her upcoming album Nu Amerykah: Part Two: Return of the Ankh should be interesting. The first single featuring Lil Wayne, who I’m not a fan of, has a heavy mix of electro and classic drum kit with bongos and a deep kick. Called “Jump up in the Air (and stay there)” is actually a bonus on the album. Madlib returns to produce a track on the album along with ?uestlove and James Poysner, and J Dilla returns post-humously with a track that was made way back in 2007. Badu says that this album is more emotional for her than a social commentary like Part one. Anyway, I have high hopes for the album, but I’ll just have to wait.

SOTD - Gorillaz - Stylo (Ft. Mos Def & Bobby Womack)

It stands for song of the day, I thought you guys were smarter than that.

Anyway, we have a treat today. New music from Gorillaz! We may have heard that they were done making music, but I guess we were all wrong. I suppose that while writing an opera, recording all the music they found sometime to make this.

A little more electronic than previous works, it’s definitely them and I quite like it. This song will be off their next album “Plastic Beach” which is set for a March 8th 2010 release.  It’s got a ton of guests, including Snooop Dogg, De La Soul, Paul Simonon (The Clash). 16 songs of awesome, I can’t wait for. Ok, I’ll stop now, here’s the song.

So what do you think

Hot chip is hot…

Oh my jesus you guys hot chip makes the sexiest beats evar!

Not really but there new single is wonderful.  I’ve been a fan of this group of electronic minded people since their amazing L.P Coming on Strong came out in 2005. A mix of electronic glitch bongos, dreamy synths and sexy time vocals sung with a heavenly croon by Alexis Taylor. (that’s right I actually did research for this post ).  Anywhosies their new single for there album One Life Stand, thats supposed to be out sometime this year dropped a while back, and I’ve been listening to it on repeat ALOT.

That’s the official video for it. Needless to say i can’t wait for the full album.

No More Pirates

My song of the day is Chris Garnea’s  No More Pirates from his second album El Radio. To describe his work is very difficult, this particular track has horns, a steady drum beat and smooth vocals that sound like Jeffery Lewis and Colin Meloy had a voice baby. There is something about his voice that just makes you want to keep on listening to it for the rest of the day. The horn track also has a nice sound that gives it some flair and makes the vocals not sound repetitive. Essentially it is just a well put together song that makes you smile, at times I want to compare him to Andy Combs and the Moth, but that might be just because of their lyrics and taking about pirates and stuff. Anyway, have a listen and go see what else he has, or maybe just buy one of his albums.

Le Loup is a rad band

Le Loup  is a washington D.C based band that is doing some pretty incredible stuff to my ears right now.  Their myspace page jokingly states that they play idol/chinese traditional/surf music. In reality they basically write music that makes you think of  a world were humans live in contact with greek gods, and mystical creatures come to life and inhabit the places around you. They make me think of giant monsters roaming the world and forests filled with sprites and crystal caverns with sacred alters in the center. A time when people didn’t know the science behind lightning storms and thought instead, it was the gods who were angry at them.

If I was forced to define the style of music that this amazing band creates, I would say that they are alt rock, orchestral, nouveau folk like the style of  Arcade Fire. But even that is forcing them into a genre, when really this band is unclassifiable. All i can say is : listen to them yourselves.

Your mind will be blown.
